The 1955 “Good Wife” Guide

leave a comment »

My mom had sent this to me a while ago, and after discussing media portrayals of groups, I decided to look this image up again and read over it.

It amazes me that only 50 years ago women were expected to be there solely to serve and please their husband.  Women were expected to “greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in our desire to please him.”  After reading this I can see how such gender portrayals for women were formed, and also why female portrayals compliment the tough, emotionless, and domestic portrayals of men in the media.  I am glad that the “good wife” guide for women would be very different today, but I am disappointed that the media still feeds into stereotypical portrayals of men and women.
