MIB and ET: A Not So Threatening Alien Invasion

leave a comment »

Today in class we were discussing how many recent alien invasion films reflected anxieties in society.  Some of these included the fear of immigrants, terrorists, or other threatening forces.  We talked about films such as Independence Day, War of the Worlds, and District 9.  However, we failed to mention two films that offer a different perspective on alien invasions: Men In Black (1997) and ET (1982). Men In Black is about two secret government agents (Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones) who must recover a powerful object called “The Galaxy” before a group of aliens use the object to blow up the planet.  Their quest if filled with humorous jokes and witty comedy. This sci-fi comedy makes the threat of an alien invasion, well…not so threatening. In comparison, ET is about a young boy, Elliott, who befriends an “extra-terrestrial” who is stranded here on Earth.  The friendship formed between the pair is a truly heartwarming story. ET is not seen as a threat at all to Elliott and his friends: they want to help the alien return home.  MIB and ET are two films that demonstrate how not all alien invasion films are threatening or place aliens in a negative light.
