Disney- finally sending the right message

leave a comment »

While many other Disney movies are teaching kids that life is a fairytale, filled with love and magic, Disney’s new animated movie, The Princess and the Frog, features Tiana, a hard-working and realistic lead. The Princess and the Frog, which involves Disney’s first major African-American princess, not only teaches children the importance of achieving their dreams, but also emphasizes determination in order to do so. With other movies, such as Pinocchio, teaching kids to believe in magic and to wish on a stars, this movie shows that dreams are made not only through wishing, but by putting in the work. Although this message loses some of  the dreamy and romantic appeal seen in other movies, I think it is extremely beneficial to the children watching because it helps to empower them. It is a much more realistic message that shows them they have the power to accomplish their own dreams. While this movie may break away from other Disney molds- weak girls who need help accomplishing their dreams- The Princess and the Frog, shows that dreams do come true, but it is up to you to make it happen.
