I found this article to be particularly interesting because it came at a time when there hadn’t been much negative news from the NBA in a while. In recent years the commisioner of the league, David Stern, has been making a number of changes to try and improve the image of the NBA in the public. Most of these changes came after Artest ran into the stands and started pounding Detriot Piston’s fans after one of them threw a drink at him. Since that time the NBA has implemented a dress code which has had a very positive effect on the league as more people are beginning to look at it as a business rather than just a game. There has also been more harsh punishments for wrong doing, and more and more we are seeing teams draft players based not only on their talent, but also their character, which was not the popular thing to do in the early 2000’s. While this story may not be a shock to many, it is a very big deal in that it goes against everything that NBA has been trying to do in recent years. Now when the public thinks about the NBA, Ron Artest taking a swig of Hennessy at halftime while the coach goes over the plan for the second half might be one of the first things that comes to mind.
