Jersey Shore Giving Bad Representation

leave a comment »

The hyped up reality TV show ‘Jersey Shore’ debuted on MTV last week and has already been amidst a lot of controversy. Staff at the MTV office in New York City have received death threats through things such as email and Facebook over how Italian-Americans are represented in the show. Although it can be seen as representing the entire ethnicity to some people, the show isn’t actually saying all Italian-Americans are like that. They just picked a selected number of young ‘guidos’ and ‘guidettes’ that they thought could provide the most entertainment. It is not just Italian-Americans getting upset either, as people that live near the Jersey Shore are also feeling the heat. They feel like this show is creating a false image of the area and that it is badly misrepresenting them. This is just one quote from the article I read above:

“Their behavior is reprehensible and demeaning in all respects,” André DiMino, the president of Unico National, told the NY Times.”I don’t see any redeeming value in the show. They are an embarrassment to themselves and to their families.”

Even with all the hype, the show only drew in a little over one million viewers.
