Why Girls Go Extreme

leave a comment »

This article is all about the differences which exist between men and women. The ways each gender are portrayed are very similar to those we discussed in class. This article is all about women mountain climbers. “It was 10 to one, men to women. Now what I am seeing is 50/50,” observes Ted Hansen, a longtime climbing guide who now works at the Yosemite Mountain Shop. This quote is in regards to the sport of climbing growing in popularity among women. Women used to accompany their male partner and “try” climbing with them, but now they are embarking on the journey with their other lady friends on their own. The sport is described by women as mentally freeing their mind of the constant multi-tasking because it requires a 100% focus.

A really interesting point in the article is that women are not only at a level playing field with men on this sport, they may in fact be better at it. Because women are more flexible, lighter and their center of gravity is closer to the ground, it helps with the mechanics of climbing. They don’t attack the mountain with a brute force as men tend to. Their mental state is also calmer and so if a man were to be unsuccessful, his macho attitude would get in the way, yet a woman would stay collected and persevere. The rest of the article talks more about the gender differences between male and female climbers.
