iPhone coming to Verizon Network this September?

leave a comment »

Rumors and speculation have long surrounded Apple’s latest update to the iPhone, the supposedly “4G” capable device. The Wall Street Journal has added fuel to the fire, reporting that the new iPhone would be coming this September. Since previous iPhone updates have historically be unveiled in September, and given the current development cycle, these rumors have an air of truth about them. What is cause for more speculation is that these updated iPhones would be available to Verizon Wireless customers.

This rumor is of real importance if it holds to be true, as AT&T has had exclusive rights to the iPhone since its release. Verizon has launched several touch screen phones in response to the demand for smart phones, but the iPhone itself represents a huge market share, and a real draw to potential customers. Verizon users have long awaited the iPhone, and for good reason: The iPhone is available in other countries for several different networks entirely.

This new availability would result in a change in dynamics for the smart phone market, with Apple standing to make a great deal of money in sales of their product. It remains to be seen if there are any truth to these rumors, but interest in this area is sure to increase as September 2010 draws nearer.

UPDATE: Apple’s shares have shot up to record numbers following reports that the iPhone is coming to Verizon Wireless. Apple shares rose 2 percent, peaking at $236.95 for the trading day.
