Hulu Subscription Fee

leave a comment »

As early as May 24th, viewers of Hulu, the popular online site for watching television shows, could be forced to pay a $9.95 subscription fee.

Under the proposal, Hulu would continue to provide the previous five episodes of popular shows such as Fox’s “Glee,” “ABC’s Lost,” and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”  Viewers who want to watch additional episodes would have to pay the monthly subscription fee to access Hulu Plus, a more comprehensive selection of videos.

The cause of the possible monthly fee is because of the threat that television executives feel to not “suffer the same fate as music industry or newspapers, which saw users flock to free access to songs, stories and classified ads online — and revenues plummet.”

Recently, the New York Times has required a subscription to the paper to view online versions and stories.  This could be a trend that we see continue through “new media” to prevent people from being able to access information and entertainment online for free.
