Not Quite a Hard- Bodied Hero

The word hero does not come to mind when you picture Shia LaBeouf in your head. However, in the film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, LeBeof plays the hero of the film, Sam Witwicky. There are evident differences between the character Sam Witwicky and Rocky Balboa in Rocky IV played by Sylvester Stallone. Rocky is your typical hard body hero, an invincible force with bulging muscles, trained to fight and ultimately win. Rocky can be beat to a pulp and still remain standing. On the other hand, Sam Witwicky is a modern day movie hero, a scrawny teenager who remains on the ground when he is beaten to a pulp. Rocky in Rocky IV fights against technology, beating a roided- out Russian built in a laboratory and constantly hooked up to machines whereas Witwicky fights with technology, helping the Autobots who are huge machines beat the Decepticons. However, there is a major theme the modern day hard body hero film holds the same as Rocky IV: revenge. In Rocky IV, Rocky Balboa revenges the death of his father figure, Apollo Creed. In Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Sam Witwicky revenges the death of his machine father figure, Optimus Prime, who comes back to life with Sam’s help. In modern films, there are still traces of the typical 1980s hard body hero.
