The New Justin Bieber?

And now before you roll your eyes and skip over this blog post simply because the name of the prepubescent teen pop sensation was mentioned, hear me out. Overnight, it seems as though there’s a new YouTube musical sensation by the name of Greyson Michael Chance. The young musician’s piano cover of ‘Paparazzi’, done well enough to rival Lady Gaga’s original version, went viral over the World Wide Web making headlines on various sites such as and being tweeted about left and right. I’ll admit it myself – I even posted about it in my personal blog, because I feel it deserves every bit of attention it can get. In my humble opinion, the 6th grader has immense talent showing incomprehensible piano skills for someone of that age and an impressive vocal styling. Ellen DeGeneres has already booked him for her show on Thursday! Talk about fast. Which leads me to my next point – how on earth do these videos, in this case a simple recording from a recital, go from zero hits to millions in such a short span of time? It’s incredible how certain things with a reasonable amount of buzz can blow up so quickly. Of course, with today’s technology at our fingertips, it is utterly possible.

And on a different but somewhat related note, is this kid really the next Justin Bieber? As we mentioned in class, Justin Bieber went from some nothing kid in Canada posting videos of himself singing Usher songs, and now he can’t go anywhere without a swarm of screaming girls and his name all over Twitter. Who and what decides those who make it into the talent industry? Greyson is just as talented, if not more; he’s already composing his own songs and his natural musical skills are incredibly mind-boggling. But then again, who’s to say there aren’t hundreds of thousands of children who are just as gifted out there? Will this kid get a record deal out of this, or is he just another passing fad? Just something to think about.

If you haven’t seen the video yet, I highly recommend watching a few minutes of it.
