Women’s role in Media…..Pretty Make Up

leave a comment »

As we learned in class, women have a particular role that play in society and the media. Women in media, then to be very put together to represent a perfect” image. Women in the media are always dressed nicely, are in shaped and have a look that many aspired to look like. Media messages about women, is along the lines if you don’t look like this person, then don’t bother. Women in news broadcast, have a higher image to uphold. They look serious, but not too masculine because no one will watch their newscast. They can’t look to “girly” because they need to be taken seriously, since the broadcast world is still heavily dominated by men.
On the Today’s show, Katie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb appeared on air without any makeup. They lasted like that for their entire hour. Their fellow colleagues, Ann Curry and Meredith Vieria both came out without makeup, to support the cause. They stated that they felt liberated
To be fair, men have to look presentable while on air, but do not have to endure the maintenance that female anchors have to go through.
We live in a very image driven society and act such as not wearing making during a morning show, is a very big act.
