‘Decision Points’ book tour for Bush

Tonight (Monday, Nov 8th), NBC will air an exclusive interview with former President George Bush and daytime host Matt Lauer. This interview will kick off the book tour for President Bush’s recently published memoir “Decision Points,” and is said to cover nearly “every subject under the sun.” Taking place over two days in Bush’s home state of Texas, the interview with Lauer allowed the ex-president to get some things off of his chest. Instead of bombarding him with prosecuting questions, Lauer conducted his interview with a sort of conversational manner while still tacking very serious issues. The tone of the interview is said to follow in the same suit of the memoir and have a casual tone while still addressing pressing matters of his presidency.

The article published in The New York Times yesterday, talks about the decisions regarding the series of interviews that will be conducted during the book tour and the general “tone” of the tour. He will sit down with both Oprah Winfrey and Rush Limbaugh and have printed interviews in magazines such as AARP The Magazine. In all forms of interview, planners for the book tour wanted a comfortable setting for President Bush to talk openly about his own personal feelings and what he included in his book. At the same time they did not want “the interview to be perceived as a series of softballs.” Along with comfort, audience size was an important factor. Matt Lauer is a daily host on the top rated morning show the”Today” show.

This interview should be very interesting for both Bush supporters and critics because of its vast range of topics. Parts of the interview have already been released including topics such as the Iraq war and Kanye West’s accusations of President Bush being racist. As Bush said to Lauer, that was “one of the most disgusting moments of my presidency.” The silence that Bush has held since his presidency up until this point has heightened the anticipation for the book release and is sure to generate a large response of viewers.

Following tonight’s special is President Bush’s interview with Oprah on Tuesday, a radio interview with Sean Hannity Tuesday night, a spot on the Bill O’Reilly show Thursday night, the CBS Sunday Morning show with his wife Laura, and a visit on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno next week. Stay tuned!
