Billboard tracks artists’ social-media popularity

leave a comment »

Billboard has produced a new chart, called the Social 50. On this chart, artists’ popularity within social media is ranked. In order to calculate the 50 most popular artists each week, Billboard uses the number of weekly followers, additions or subtractions. This way it is easy to track how many people are beginning to follow someone, and how many people are no longer following someone they previously were. Page views and song plays on artists’ pages are being used to track the popularity too, using sites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, iLike, and YouTube.

The chart director, Silvio Pietroluongo, said today that the goal of the Social 50 is to provide users with information about “the artists that music fans engage with the most in the social arena, which in today’s world, is a significant validation of their investment in an act.”

The top five right now are Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Eminem, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj.
