England Blames BBC for Failed World Cup Bid

leave a comment »

The BBC received more than 5,000 comments on its website from angry British soccer fans within the first hour of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids being given to Russia and Qatar respectively. More than half of these messages were people accusing FIFA of making a corrupt decision, or simply disappointment that England didn’t win the bid.

Many of the remaining comments pointed fingers at the BBC, which ran a segment of its program, Panorama, about possible corruption in FIFA only three days before the bid selection took place. Many people think the station’s blatant criticism of soccer’s governing body, FIFA, spoiled England’s chances of winning the bid.

The BBC, however, claims it could not possibly run the segment after the bid, for fear of looking like sore losers if England were to be denied the World Cup bid. It also claims that “it was such a catastrophic defeat that people cannot possibly regard it as all our fault.” England got only two votes from FIFA delegates, and one of which was from the English representative. The BBC says that the Panorama program helped explain why England did not get the bid, not that it caused it.
