Hands Free Texting

With the society that we live in today, we expect instant gratification in just about everything that we do. Because this trend has been exploding in the world of communication, emails are actually becoming the new snail mail. With texting available, there are those that don’t even have the patience to wait for an email to send. Texting has created a phenomenon that leads us to have communication with others at all time. However, it has become a common problem that people are texting and driving. This led to 16,000 deaths in just four years. With this staggering numbers, it became essential that it became illegal in almost all states.

This is a problem for many people. When we are driving for long distances, we feel the need to answer our phones and text our friends back because we cannot possibly wait to arrive at our destination. It comes back to that fact that we need instantaneous responses or we get offended. Since it’s a banned practice in 23 states, cell phone companies think that they have created the perfect solution….texting that doesn’t require you to actually use your hands. Droid has created an application for their phones that allows its users to speak into the phone and have the phone convert your spoken word into a text that you can send off. Amazing? Absolutely. Safe? Debatable. Although this system takes away the distraction of using your hands for something other than driving, it doesn’t eliminate the distraction. This app still requires its users to focus more on answering the text and thinking about a response rather than driving their vehicle.

Since the app is so new, there hasn’t been any conclusive evidence that shows whether or not this program will benefit cell phone users. But in the meantime, I guess we should all enjoy the convenience of not having to type out a text…as long as we are cautious to the dangers that this app can still have for our daily lives, especially when we are behind the wheel.–0465/
