Site for Teens to Post their Writing

leave a comment »

This week, Jacob Lewis, a former managing editor of The New Yorker launched a new social networking site for teens to post their own personal writing, “connect with other readers, and discover new stories and authors.” People will be able to post their writing either on their computers or their cell-phones. Jacob Lewis came up with this idea after reading an article published in the New Yorker about a group of Japanese women who wrote fiction on their cell phones. The article coined this act as “the first literary genre to emerge from the cellular age.”

Figment will also be used as an opportunity for publishers to learn about teenagers and their reading interests. Since the craze of the Twilight series, publishers have been very interested in teens and what it is that attracts them to certain books. It will be interesting to see what types of writing are the most popular on Figment, and to see other ways that publishers will interact with the site.
