Tripping. New York Jets, Number…..Coach?

leave a comment »

In the midst of the New York Jets 10-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins, Jets coach Sal Alosi clearly felt his team wasn’t tackling well enough on its own, so he decided to take matters into his own hands.  As Dolphins cornerback Nolan Carroll ran down the sidelines on punt coverage, Alosi blatantly stuck out his knee, taking out Carroll as he went by.  Although this is something you don’t see everyday, the Dolphins we not at all surprised by these actions.

‘They’re cheaters,” Dolphins inside linebacker Channing Crowder said. ”They do what they do. They cheat.”

Veteran Running Back Ricky Williams echoed his teammates statements,by simply saying, “It’s the Jets right? We’re not surprised.”

As a Miami fan, this is truly appalling.  If the Jets do anything less than fire this coach it will be an injustice.  Then again, we are talking about the Jets here.  This is the same team who played a star player five days after he was arrested for DWI, and played it down when it was questioned.  If the Jets do not take action, then the NFL should, but the Jets are a big market, well supported team, while Miami is not as much so.  The NFL has shown  favoritism to certain teams in the past,  so it will be very interesting to see whether the same happens here.  I expect that the league will act on this matter, however, as it is something that really needs to be addressed.  People on the sidelines need to know that they cannot interfere with the play under any circumstances, and I think that the NFL will act on this.

However, this dilemma brings up a larger point.  Will the NFL favor the Jets because they are a bigger team than the Dolphins.  They have shown this before, with teams such as the Colts and Patriots, and it is definitely a question worth asking whether or not they will do it again?  If Alosi is allowed to remain in the league, it starts a dangerous precedent which the league would be smart to avoid.
