Little Known Teams, Big Time Viewing

leave a comment »

The unlikely Final Four in college basketball’s NCAA tournament consists of Virginia Commonwealth, Butler, UConn, and Kentucky. Not the big name teams college basketball fans are accustomed to seeing in the tournament’s Final Four. Big name teams such as Duke, and Kansas have a huge fan base all across the country. Butler and VCU are small schools with not many fans.

This article shows that despite the small schools, Saturday night’s first game between Butler and VCU posted an 8.9 rating and a 17 share. The rating was the highest since 2005. Butler and VCU drew an 8.3 rating and averaged 14.2 million viewers. Connecticut and Kentucky drew a 9.5 rating and pulled in 16.7 million viewers.

These are ratings are a positive for CBS and Turner, which televised every game for the first time ever. This was also the first year of the NCAA’s 14 year, 10.8 billion contract with CBS and Turner.
