Does Facebook Induce Fear?

leave a comment »

You probably think it’s not a real thing, but in reality we go through FOMO every day.  At certain points in everyone’s life we all have fear of missing out.  You can be having a great time on vacation, but if you’re friends are all getting together for a party, you’re not going to want to go to the beach, your going to want to go to the party to be with all of your friends and not miss anything.  Any time you think you’re going to miss out on something that your not a part of you’re having fomo.

According to this New York Times article,  FOMO, “refers to the blend of anxiety, inadequacy and irritation that can flare up while skimming social media like Facebook and Twitter. It happens when we see people’s status updates or albums with all our friends in them. Usually we think that these social networking sites are bringing us all closer together in a good way but this article is making the argument that these sites are effecting people negatively and psychologically in many ways.  While its great to know what our friends are doing all throughout the day, sometimes it can be a bad thing when we know too much about what people are doing.  Sometimes we just need to get away from our phones and computers and enjoy our own lives, without worrying about others lives.
