1-800 Instant Porn

I came across this article and I thought it was important because it relates to conversations we had in class about the growth of the porn industry. The article basically talks about how teenagers across the U.S. could call a toll-free hotline if they had questions about sex and AIDS. Today, if the same number is dialed, people get a recording of giggling women offering to talk dirty for a price of about $2.99 per minute. The Associated Press found that over the past 13 years a Philadelphia company, known as PrimeTel Communications, has quietly gained control over nearly a quarter of all the 1-800 numbers in the U.S. and Canada. Of those 1-800 numbers, 1.7 million numbers appear to be used for redirecting callers to a phone-sex service. I thought that this was important to consider because it shows how the sex industry continues to evolve and find new ways. What’s even more alarming is that because sex through the telephone can be considered an old form of pornography, with today’s growth of the Internet and sites where people download pornography from it is easy to miss what companies like PrimeTe Communications are doing this.
