Kim Kardashian Breaks National News

leave a comment »

Sunday night I was sitting on my computer, browsing through Facebook and Twitter, when I came across an interesting “tweet.” It read “Osama Bin Laden dead? I can’t wait to hear President Obama’s announcement!!!” Of course, hearing this type of news, no matter the source, I decided to look further in to what was really going on.  Sure enough, I began seeing posts from news outlets like CNN, the New York Times, and others.  It was interesting to see how the story of Osama Bin Laden had leaked before the president made the official announcement.  Instances like these make me wonder about the future of news. The fact that the first post I saw about Osama Bin Laden’s death was posted by Kim Kardashian seemed disturbing.  The spike in volume of users on Twitter that night was extreme.  It seems as if this is the way people enjoy hearing about and reacting to the news.  It will be interesting to see, after this instance, whether or not people will react first to speculation on social networking sites, or if they will wait for official announcements from reputable sources.
